25 September 2009 McCREA WELCOMES CHANGES IN DRIVER LICENSE RECOGNITION LAW DUP MLA for Mid Ulster Ian McCrea has welcomed the introduction of the proposed Motor Vehicle (Exchangeable Licenses) Order which has been introduced recently by the Department of the Environment. Mr McCrea said: "I welcome the introduction of the proposed Motor Vehicle (Exchangeable Licences) Order which was introduced by the Department of the Environment this week. This legislation will end long standing discrimination that a number of residents experienced in Northern Ireland due to a loophole in legislation. The legislation that was in place resulted in people from countries such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia and South Africa not having their license recognized in Northern Ireland and not being able to transfer to Northern Ireland driving license. I and my colleagues have raised this issue with the DOE Minister Edwin Poots and I am glad that he has responded with decisive action to rectify the situation. The welcomed changes to legislation will be brought before the Assembly shortly and will take effect on 12th October 2009.”
